Portfolio

In my career as a science writer and illustrator, I've had the opportunity to contribute to teams at The Grass Foundation, Rita Allen Foundation, The Kavli Foundation, the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory at Caltech, and the USC Viterbi School of Engineering.

Curious about this background image? That was my backyard after I spread a seed mix I bought at the Theodore Payne Foundation.

Insights and Practical Considerations for Communicating Basic Science

At The Kavli Foundation, I had the privilege to design a print and digital magazine for SciPEP, the Science Public Engagement Partnership between Kavli and the DOE Office of Science. A capstone of the partnership was this report synthesizing five years of conferences, webinars, trainings, and landscape reports. When we met about creating this resource, I suggested we lay it out like a magazine, and someone said, "But who will do that?" And will much glee, I replied, "Me!"

As a magazine nerd, I relished the opportunity to lay our magazine spreads to make the content sing. I also created the infographic to showcase facts and figures about support, key sectors, and funding for basic science.

Mechanisms of Neural Resilience

I had the opportunity to speak to many inspiring scientists during my tenure at The Kavli Foundation. In this video, I spoke with Professor Wolfgang Stein about Kavli-funded work on the affects of climate change on crabs. I enjoyed the entire process of creating this video, from interviewing him to sourcing imagery and videos, and selecting the music.

What's in a Species Name?

Eponyms are scientific names for species that refer to people, but for mollusks, almost 90% of those people are men. Malacology Curator Jann Vendetti’s research explores the nepotism, sexism, and more behind the naming of species—and how we can do better.
